Safe destinations for Solo Female Travelers

"Don't be afraid to go alone...and don't be afraid to like it"

I am an avid fan of solo traveling, but I also understand the world can be a dangerous place. Here are some of my favorite  destination choices that I have personally explored and found to be safe as a solo female traveler. Stay safe out there sisters!

Barcelona, Spain

Spain is a fantastic destination for solo travelers and Barcelona offers a wealth of attractions. I like to think of it as the New York City of Europe. There is so much to explore, from the stunning Sagrada Familia to the lively La Rambla you surely won’t be bored. Explore the city’s unique architecture, parks, and beaches. Don’t forget to visit Park Güell and Casa Batlló. Spanish cuisine is a must-try. Taste traditional dishes like paella, tapas, and churros. While Spanish is the primary language, English is widely understood in tourist areas. Barcelona has an efficient public transportation system, including buses and the metro. A T-10 card can be a cost-effective way to get around. As always be cautious when going out at night. Stick to well-lit and populated areas and viva ls vida!

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Monte-Carlo is one of the safest cities I have ever traveled too. The entire city is under closed circuit surveillance. In Monaco there are police officers per capita than anywhere else in the world, making it one of the safest destinations for solo female adventurists. Though Monte-Carlo is famous for it’s casino and annual Grand Prix race event, there is so much more to be explored. They have a 3 story aquarium filled with exotic marine animals I had never seen the likes of before. There is almost always an event going on down by the pier, and after all it is the mediterranean so if you are bound to enjoy some spectacular views of mountains overlooking crystal clear waters.

Nice, France

Ahh, the French Riviera. A place so great, I visited twice, in 2021 and again in 2022. I love love love Nice, France. It’s located close enough to Monaco and St. Tropez where you can explore both places during your stay. Walk along the famous beachfront promenade in Nice, or take your time exploring the cobblestone streets of the old city. You may arrive alone, but you will not feel alone in this bustling sea side city. There is so much to explore in this area, you will not be bored. It is also a great airport to book cheap flights to other parts of Europe (ie: Barcelona $50 one way ticket from Nice)

Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal easily made it to the top of my favorite destinations list. All the better, it’s a safe spot for solo female travelers. I spent 2 weeks in Portugal in 2023. I explored Lisbon, Cascais, Cabo Da Roca, Azenhas Do Mar, Sintra and then made my way down to the Algarve for a weekend. The Western Coast of Europe has so much to offer the adventurous. Enjoy Fado music while enjoy some of the fresh seafood this world has to offer. Wander around the country with a sense of wanderlust because baby you are safe here. I don’t speak any Portuguese and I got along just fine during my trip. There is Uber and Free Now available making commuting around the city, easy peasy. Fear less, explore more.

Liberia, Costa Rica

I have been to Costa Rica twice now. Once with my mother and the other was a solo adventure. Both times I flew into Liberia, which is a smaller city than the capitol San Jose. Though both are supposed to be safe for solo female travelers, I have heard that San Jose can be a bit more chaotic due to it being the capitol city and major hub of the country.

With that being said, Costa Rica is one of my favorite places on this planet. Endless waterfalls, lush green tropical rainforests, scenic beaches, volcanoes, hot springs — Costa Rica has so much to offer.

From Liberia you can easily explore 2 different volcanoes
La Arenal volcano is about 2 hours from Liberia and worth your time to take the trip out there
La Rincon de la Vieja is less than 1 hour from Liberia

There are a few different beach towns close to Liberia my favorites include Playa Hermosa and Playa del Coco.

Turin, Italy

I have been around the world and seen a lot of places but this place absolutely blew my mind. From the scenic mountain ranges to the rich history and delicious cuisine, Turin, Italy has my highest recommendation for solo female travelers. I traveled solo here in 2021. It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in Italy (and that’s saying a lot).

While you’re here be sure to check out:
-The Egyptian museum
-One of my favorite hikes of all time at The Sacra di san Michelle.

Turin is an easy city to commute to and from. Consider taking the train from Turin to Milan or Genova. You could also go on to Monaco and France.
